Next Time We Won’t Flinch When We Feel Love

*Wild Card Post*

.

Dear girl,

When the sun hit your cheeks I saw you flinch.

Saw your body react to the heat after years of cowering in the shadows.

You took off your mask, your protection.

No one told you to, but you did it for you.

You are brave girl,

It takes courage to walk so close to the flames.

.

Dear girl,

I know it hurts, your face burns.

The rays of sun have set you ablaze,

And you’re not used to it.

I don’t know why they made you feel like you had to pretend.

Or why they kept you fearing the light.

They used you girl,

They used us.

Threatened us with manipulation,

And kept us bound by chains of darkness.

.

Dear girl,

It’s okay, I’m here now.

Cradle your smoldering head in my charred hands.

We can breathe in the smoke together,

Stomp out the embers we’re told are normal to have.

I won’t let the flames disfigure your face like they did mine, girl.

You deserve better.

.

Dear girl,

I promise the sun will become less frightening.

You’ll learn to love it’s warmth

Rather than the cold, black seclusion you’re used to.

You’ll learn to cherrish the moments when flames caress your skin.

It’ll be okay girl,

I am here,

We are here

We’ll face the sun’s vibrancy together.

And next time we won’t flinch when we feel love.
